Online Pilates for Women Over 50: Is It Really for Me?
More and more women over 50 are looking for ways to stay active that feel supportive, realistic, and fit into real life. Online Pilates often comes up as an option– but it’s normal to have questions (and a few doubts).
This blog answers some of the ones I hear most, so you can decide whether online Pilates feels like the right step for you.
• Is Pilates Suitable for Women Over 50?
Absolutely! Yes. Yes. Yes.
Pilates is low-impact, adaptable, and focuses on strength, balance, posture, and mobility – all things that matter more, not less, as we get older. It’s particularly helpful through and after menopause, when changes in strength, joint comfort, and confidence can start to creep in.
Research has shown that Pilates can improve muscle strength and postural control in post-menopausal women (Bergamin et al), but just as importantly, many women tell me they feel more at home in their bodies again. Stronger, steadier and more connected.
• Can I do Pilates at Home Without Equipment?
Yes – you really can.
Most of my online Pilates sessions are mat-based and use your own body-weight. We will also use small pieces of equipment, but I always email ahead with guidance and links to equipment, if you want to purchase anything.
Household items can work just as well, and nothing is ever compulsory. Pilates doesn’t need a cupboard full of kit to be effective, you can build in the kit that feels useful to you.
• How Often Should I Practice Pilates To See Results?
Consistency matters more than perfection.
For most people, practising 3-4 times a week leads to noticeable changes in strength, flexibility, and overall wellbeing. That said, even once or twice a week can make a difference, especially if you’re rebuilding after a break, working with pain or fatigue or mixing it with another class type.
With my online classes, you pay once for an 8 week block (you can pay per class or weekly). One payment, one link and you choose what fits your energy that week.
• What Are the Benefits of Online Pilates Sessions?
Honestly? Convenience is a big one.
No driving. No parking. No rushing around (people have even been known to do it in their PJ’s). You can join from home, in clothes that feel comfy.
You still get clear guidance, structure, and a sense of shared space, without the pressure of being in a gym. Many people also find online sessions more affordable and easier to stick with long-term.
• Do I Need Prior Experience to Start Online Pilates?
Not at all.
No prior experience is necessary. I offer beginner-friendly sessions and specialised classes for cancer rehab and and breast cancer specific and also hypopressive & pelvic floor. I encourage 1:1 sessions so that you can progress and adapt exercises to suit your unique requirements.
You do not need to keep up– you are encouraged to modify and adapt with guidance about exercises that suit your body, your history, and your goals.
