Your Gut, Your Lymphatic System… and What Your Body Might Be Trying to Tell You
You don’t usually think about your gut…
until something feels a bit different
Bloating that wasn’t there before
A heaviness through your middle
Changes in your stools
Or that uncomfortable sense that things just aren’t moving as they should
And you start to wonder…
– Is this just digestion… or is something else going on?
It’s Not Just Digestion… It’s About Flow
Your gut doesn’t work on its own
It sits right in the middle of a bigger system:
- Your digestive tract
- Your lymphatic system
- Your liver
- Your elimination pathways
Everything here relies on movement, rhythm, and flow
When that flow is supported → things tend to feel easier
When it slows, becomes overloaded, or disrupted → symptoms start to appear
Not always loudly at first
But your body will give you clues
What the Research Tells Us (And Why It Matters)
We’re learning more and more about how connected these systems are:
- The gut plays a central role in immune function and inflammation
- The lymphatic system helps transport fats, immune cells, and waste products from the gut
- Research into the intestinal lymphatics (lacteals) shows they are essential for fat absorption and immune signalling (Randolph & Miller, Science, 2014)
- Increased intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”) has been linked with systemic inflammation and chronic conditions (Camilleri et al., Gut, 2019)
And importantly:
– The lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump like the heart
– It relies on breathing, movement, and pressure changes
Which means how you live, move, and recover matters
Your Body Speaks Through Your Gut
It might not be dinner table conversation…
but it is useful information
Stool Colour — Simple Clues
- Brown (healthy)
→ good bile flow
→ balanced digestion - Pale / clay coloured
→ reduced bile flow
→ possible liver or gallbladder involvement - Green
→ faster transit through the gut - Red or black
→ always worth medical investigation
– Not everything is a problem
…but some things are worth listening to
Stool Type — Rhythm Matters
- Hard / constipated (Type 1–2)
→ slower movement
→ often linked with dehydration or sluggish flow - Smooth / formed (Type 3–4)
→ a good balance of digestion and movement - Loose / urgent (Type 5–7)
→ irritation
→ overwhelmed or reactive system
Where the Lymphatic System Fits In
This is the bit most people are never told
Around your gut is a network of lymphatic vessels quietly doing their job
They help to:
- Move fluid
- Transport fats from digestion
- Support immune responses
- Clear waste from tissues
When this system is supported → things tend to flow
When it’s under pressure → things can start to build
• Fluid
• Inflammation
• Tissue tension
Over time, this can contribute to changes in the tissue itself
Including thickening or early fibrosis
A Gentle Word on “Leaky Gut”
This is a term that gets thrown around a lot
At its simplest:
Your gut lining acts as a barrier
Letting useful things through
Keeping others out
When that barrier is under strain:
- It can become more permeable
- Which may contribute to inflammation
• This isn’t about fear
• It’s about understanding load and support
What Can Help (Without Overcomplicating It)
You don’t need to do everything
But small, consistent support can make a difference
Movement
Walking, gentle exercise, even regular daily movement
→ helps create a pumping effect for the lymphatic system
Breathing
Your diaphragm is one of your most important lymphatic drivers
Deep, relaxed breathing
→ supports fluid movement through the abdomen
Hydration
Fluid supports fluid
Simple… but often missed
Gentle Rotation & Twisting
Helps create pressure changes through the abdomen
→ encouraging movement through both gut and lymph
Soft Touch Therapies
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
Reflexology
Gentle bodywork
→ can support the system when it feels overwhelmed or stuck
A Couple of Things You Might Not Have Been Told
- Your lymphatic system responds best to gentle rhythm, not force
- Constipation can affect how fluid moves elsewhere in the body
- Your body often gives subtle signs before bigger symptoms appear
Bringing It Back to You
This isn’t about overthinking every symptom
It’s about noticing patterns a little earlier
• When things feel heavy
• When digestion changes
• When your energy feels off
Sometimes the answer isn’t to push harder
It’s to support the system you already have
