Stronger Bones, Stronger You: The Power of Exercise In Cancer

Why Bone Health Matters in Cancer Recovery
When facing cancer, most people are overwhelmed the diagnosis and fighting the disease itself–but what about your bones?
“Did you know that a study in 2020 (Jieon Go et al) found that just over 50% of breast cancer survivors had Osteopenia and just over 15% had Osteoporosis”?
“Did you know that 84% of men survive prostate cancer for ten years or more (Salma A M El Badri et al). Long-term Androgen Deprivation Therapy (hormone therapy) used in the treatment of prostate cancer is known to have a negative impact on bone health”?
Many cancer treatments, including chemotherapy, hormone therapy and steroids, can weaken bones, increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. This means that everyday movements like bending down, and lifting things, can become risky overtime.
Exercise Can Help
Under expert guidance, movement can keep you supple and strong. Exercise is one of the most effective ways to protect and strengthen your bones. Exercise will help to keep you strong, stable and resilient during and after your cancer treatment.
The Benefits
Weight bearing and resistance exercises help slow down bone loss and will help stimulate bone growth. As you move more you become more agile, your balance improves, and your feel more stable. Your risk of falling is reduced, your muscles get stronger and you will have more energy, helping reduce fatigue. You will probably notice that as you do gentle and progressive movement much of the joint and muscle discomfort is managed better.
