Strong Foundations: Looking After Your Bones After Cancer

Your bones do more than just hold you up– they are living, dynamic tissue that respond to movement, loading, nutrition, and hormones. After cancer treatment, they may need some extra care.

Let’s talk about what happens to your bones during and after treatment– and how you can support them, safely and gently.

Why Bone Health Matters After Cancer

Treatments like chemotherapy and hormone therapy, or early menopause can cause a drop in bone density. This can lead to osteopenia or osteoporosis, increasing the risk of fractures, especially in older adults or women post-breast cancer.

According to The Royal Osteoporosis Society, one in two women over 50 in the UK will break a bone due to osteoporosis. For those recovering from cancer, the risk can be even higher.

The Good News? You Can Do Something About It

Bones respond well to weight-bearing and resistance movement– but the key is to make it safe and gradual, especially after treatment.

What Helps:

   • Walking (Yep, even short bursts!)

   • Balance and coordination training to help prevent falls

   • Gentle sgtrength training (using bodyweight, resistance bands or light weights)

   • Postural Improvement (like Pilates) to support head and neck  and spinal and pelvic alignment and load the bones safely

   • Vitamin D and calcium intake, which will be guided by your cancer team

You’re not fragile–you are rebuilding strength, one step at a time.”
