“Oncology scar therapy is a gentle, specialised approach to treating scars caused by surgeries and radiation. The goal isn’t just to heal the scar itself but to restore comfort and mobility to the surrounding areas.

The techniques I use will vary depending on the age of the scar, its condition and where you are in your cancer journey.

The techniques work to:

• Soften the tight tissue around the scars, this can be superficial and also deep where tissue can be holding other areas.

• Release tightness and restrictions in movement.

• It can help reduce pain, improve circulation and improve sensation.

How it can help after Breast Cancer Surgery and Radiation

After surgery and or radiotherapy, scar tissue can form not only on the surface but deep within the body. This can cause challenges such as:

  • Tightness when lifting your arm

  • Pain during movement or exercise

  • Being unable to do your hair or put on tight clothing

  • Emotional feelings about your body

By addressing these issues, oncology scar therapy supports physical and emotional wee-being.

What About Axillary Web Syndrome often known as Cording?

Many breast cancer survivors experience cording- a painful tightening of the tissue under the arm. It can feel like ropes. Scar therapy, combined with gentle stretching, can ease these tight bands and restore range of motion.

I am often asked – “What Happens During a Session?

You will fill out a pre-screening form. This information gives me time to plan how much time I think a session should be, look at any medication and get any extra advice from your health care team if required.

On the day I will also want to know how you are feeling so adjustments can be made, this is especially important if you are still undergoing treatment, but also taking into account any fatigue you might still be experiencing.

We will talk about the problems you are experiencing. I will want to look at the scar(s) and see how you move and how the scar feels and looks. I will ask your permission to touch sensitive areas, we will be working together and open communication is crucial.

The session will be tailored to your needs and goals. I will focus on your comfort and also how the scar reacts and adjust as required.

Techniques May Include:

  • Manual lymphatic Drainage to reduce swelling

  • Specific scar therapy techniques to soften the area and ease scar tightness

  • Myofascial release to ease scar tightness

  • Guided movement to integrate your scar into functional movement
