Trigone of the urinary bladder – This triangular tissue region is located at the base of the urinary bladder: the two ureters and the opening at the bottom of the bladder into the urethra form this area.
This muscular structure is vital for the proper functioning of the urethral valve mechanism. The urinary bladder stores and periodically releases urine under the control of neurological circuits located in the brain, spinal cord and peripheral ganglia. The trigone is the area where nerve fibres are more concentrated. These mechanoreceptors are sensitive to expansion and, once stretched, signal the brain that it needs emptying.
Any upset in the tensional forces and support offered by the position of the organs, fascia, ligaments, and muscles could lead to an overactive bladder. For example, a weakness in pelvic floor muscles could mean the mechanoreceptors keep saying the area is under tension and the bladder needs to be emptied.
