Have you ever noticed…
…that some days you wake up feeling like you’re already running on 40%?
Nothing dramatic has happened.
You simply don’t feel like yourself.
You can still go to work.
Still smile.
Still chat.
But underneath…
your battery feels flat.
The good news?
Just like our phones, our batteries don’t recharge from one thing.
They recharge from lots of small things done consistently.
I call them…
Energy Snacks.
Tiny moments that give a little energy back before we’re running on 1%.
1. Move before you feel like moving
This one surprises people.
When we’re tired we naturally want to sit still.
But our bodies often interpret prolonged sitting as a signal to conserve energy.
Gentle movement increases circulation, stimulates the nervous system and can improve mood and alertness—even if you only move for five or ten minutes. Exercise is also one of the most consistently supported non-drug approaches for reducing fatigue across many long-term health conditions.
Notice I didn’t say:
“Go to the gym.”
I said…
Move.
Walk around the garden.
March while the kettle boils.
Stretch.
Do six sit-to-stands.
Dance in the kitchen.
Everything counts.
Clinical Pearl
Your body often creates energy through movement, not before it.
2. Don’t skip breakfast
I know.
Some people love breakfast.
Others don’t.
But if you’re finding yourself constantly running on empty, it’s worth asking whether your body has enough fuel to start the day.
A breakfast containing protein, fibre and slow-release carbohydrates is more likely to provide steady energy than grabbing a biscuit on the way out of the door.
This isn’t about perfection.
It’s about giving your body something to work with.
3. Water is more powerful than we give it credit for
Fatigue is one of the earliest signs of mild dehydration.
Your brain notices it.
Your muscles notice it.
Your concentration notices it.
Sometimes we think we’re tired…
when actually…
we’re thirsty.
Before making another coffee…
try another glass of water.
4. Boundaries protect your battery
Not every invitation deserves a yes.
Not every text needs answering immediately.
Not every problem belongs to you.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt over the years is that protecting your energy isn’t selfish.
It’s maintenance.
The people who love you usually benefit from the version of you that’s charged…
not the version running on reserve.
5. Nature is a charger
There is something wonderfully ordinary about stepping outside.
Fresh air.
Trees.
The sea.
Birdsong.
Research continues to show that spending time in nature can reduce stress, improve wellbeing and strengthen social connection, especially when we experience it intentionally rather than simply passing through it.
Maybe that’s why so many of my best conversations happen…
walking.
6. Find your purpose
Purpose doesn’t have to mean climbing Everest.
Sometimes purpose is simply…
“I’m taking the dog out.”
“I’m meeting my friend.”
“I’m helping at choir.”
“I’m volunteering.”
“I’m making someone’s day a little easier.”
Purpose gives our energy somewhere to go.
7. Community matters
One of the biggest myths is that recharging always happens alone.
Sometimes it does.
Sometimes we genuinely need quiet.
But sometimes…
the right people give us energy back.
Not the people we perform for.
The people we can simply be ourselves with.
That’s one reason I’m becoming such a believer in community walks, movement groups and women’s circles.
Not because everyone needs therapy.
Because everyone needs somewhere they can exhale.
Clinical Pearl
Supportive social relationships are consistently associated with better wellbeing and resilience. The quality of connection often matters more than the quantity.
8. Collect Energy Snacks
Recharge doesn’t usually happen during a two-week holiday.
It happens every day.
Tiny moments.
A favourite song.
Five slow breaths.
Standing outside in the sunshine.
A proper laugh.
Walking around the block.
Drinking enough water.
A hug.
Stretching your shoulders.
Looking up instead of down at your phone.
Little charges.
Repeated often.
That’s how batteries stay healthy.

Fi Field Note
The older I get, the more I realise that health isn’t just about strong muscles or flexible joints.
It’s about having enough energy to enjoy your own life.
Sometimes the bravest thing we can do isn’t push through.
