Vodder Method (MLD) Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Gentle, rhythmic treatment supporting the lymphatic system.
“Light, rhytmic touch that encourages your body’s natural healing pathways.”
What Is MLD?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage using the Vodder Method is a gentle, precise technique developed in the 1930s by Dr Emil and Estrid Vodder. It supports the lymphatic system – the body’s fluid, detoxification and immune network – through carefully trained, rhythmic hand movements that encourage lymph flow.
MLD is widely used in hospitals and lymphodema services across the UK and Europe. It is particularly effective after cancer treatment, lymph node removal, trauma and surgery.
Why the Lymphatic System Matters
The lymphatic system is part of the body’s fluid balance, immune and waste-clearance network.
Every day, fluid naturally leaks from tiny blood vessels into the surrounding tissues. The lymphatic system collects this excess fluid and returns it back into circulation.
When this system is placed under extra pressure — for example after surgery, injury, inflammation or cancer treatment — fluid may begin to accumulate in the tissues.
This can lead to symptoms such as:
• swelling that comes and goes
• heaviness in an arm or leg
• tightness in the skin
• discomfort around surgical scars
Manual Lymphatic Drainage aims to gently support this natural drainage process.

When Might Manual Lymphatic Drainage Be Helpful?
MLD is often used to support people experiencing:
• swelling after surgery
• recovery after cancer treatment
• lymphatic congestion
• post-flight or travel swelling
• scar tightness or fibrosis
• chronic inflammatory conditions
MLD is also widely used as part of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) for lymphoedema management in specialist clinical settings.
Common Questions About Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage the same as massage?
No. MLD uses very light, specific movements designed to stimulate lymph flow rather than working deeply into muscles.
How soon after surgery can I have lymphatic drainage?
This depends on the procedure and your medical history. A properly trained therapist will always assess whether treatment is appropriate.

Can MLD help swelling after travel?
Long flights or extended sitting can slow circulation and lymph flow. Gentle lymphatic techniques may help support fluid movement.

Can reflexology help lymphatic circulation?
Reflexology doesn’t replace lymphatic therapy, but gentle stimulation of the feet may support relaxation and circulation.
